My Art is Dead

Playing with words and playing with material, I create opportunity for conversation.

I hope to preserve these interactions in order to help me understand the matter in and around me.

Allowing for mistakes, exchanges and traces to be left behind. These interactions occur with assistance from printmaking, photography, performance and philosophy at the core of my practice.

They are my collaborators.

Kam Chan (b.1983) lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Working across disciplines from printmaking to performance and materials such as clay and photography, Kam is within an ongoing battle to understand “what does it mean to belong in something?”
To expose the in-between and ‘just’ happening spaces that are often overlooked or missed.

My Art is Dead comes from the idea that art (as a verb) is mourning; between being created (thus alive) and being completed (thus dead). As artists we are between remembering and forgetting. Kam wants to celebrate the mundane pauses that happen in this space and allow for conversation to happen between our thoughts, material, process and place.

Outside of her conceptual art practices, Kam is the Engagement Producer for the Edinburgh Futures Institues Innovation Services. https://efi.ed.ac.uk/ ; co-Vice President for Visual Arts Scotland visualartsscotland.org and,  a co-producer with the Architecture Fringe architecturefringe.com

From 2018 -2022, Kam was the Programme Adminstrator for Creative Informatics, a collaborative AHRC research & development project with The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, Creative Edinburgh and CodeBase.
